Building custom layouts
Use the FancyZones-style grid editor to merge and split zones, then save named layouts you can switch between.
Beyond the three built-in presets, VirtualZones has a full grid editor for building your own multi-zone layouts.
Open the editor
From the Layout dropdown, choose Edit Layouts…. This opens the grid editor window.
Merge and split
The editor starts from a grid of cells:
- Click a shared border between two zones to merge them into one.
- Click an internal line inside a merged zone to split it back apart.
- Adjust the row and column count to change the underlying grid.
Build up any arrangement — a big center zone with two narrow side columns, a 2×2 quad, an L-shaped work area, whatever fits your monitor.
Save and switch
Give the layout a name and click Save. It appears in the main Layout dropdown immediately, alongside the presets. You can save as many named layouts as you want and switch between them from the dropdown or by cycling with Ctrl+Alt+C.
Presets are layouts too
The three built-ins (25/50/25, 50/50, 33/33/33) are ordinary layouts — rename, edit, or delete them like any custom one. Use Restore Defaults in the editor to bring back any you have removed.
If you used an older version with the single-rectangle “Custom” region, it is migrated automatically into a named layout the first time you launch a version with the grid editor.
